Kellogg's Nutri-Grain Series Trial

Seven more BMD Northcliffe athletes qualified through the Kellogg's Nutri-Grain Ironman Series at the trial held over three grueling rounds at Tugun on the weekend. The top 11 highest point scorers after the three rounds in both male and female earned themselves a birth into the professional ironman series.

In the women's field Flora Manciet was the highest of the BMD Northcliffe girls in 3rd, with Sheree Merryfull in 4th, Bonnie Hancock in 7th, Terri Sullivan in 8th and Katie Graham in 10th. These 5 girls will join the 3 BMD Northcliffe girls that automatically qualified through from last season's series - Kristyl Smith, Elizabeth Pluimers and Courtney Hancock.

In the men's trial, we had two BMD Northcliffe athletes to qualify through for their first ever Kellogg's Nutri-Grain Series with Cory Hill in 6th and "Kiwi" Dan Moodie in 9th. These two youngsters will join automatic qualifiers, Shannon Eckstein, Zane Holmes, Pierce Leonard and Nathan Smith. Unfortunately, after placing 4th in Round 1, veteran Dean Mercer was forced to pull out with a calf injury after the heat of Round 2, leaving his hopes resting on the wild card position into the series being picked by selectors.

After the weekends results, BMD Northcliffe will have a strong representation in the series which kicks off with Round 1 on the Gold Coast, January 16 with 14 of the 34 competitors.

The dates and venues for the series are below.

Round 1 - 16 January 2010 - Kurrawa
Round 2 - 17 January 2010 - Kurrawa
Round 3 - 6 February 2010 - Alexandra Headland
Round 4 - 7 February 2010 - Alexandra Headland
Round 5 - 21 February 2010 - North Cronulla

BMD NORTHCLIFFE CLAIMS SIXTH CONSECUTIVE TITLE

BMD Northcliffle Surf Club defended their Australian Champion Club Title on the weekend making it their sixth consecutive title. The Club won 25 gold medals, 18 silver and 12 bronze and finished 127.5 points ahead of closest rival Kurrawa. This is the clubs official biggest winning margin over the past six years, a very impressive effort given that the titles were held in Perth. The Championships will return to Kurrawa on the Gold Coast next year allowing BMD Northcliffe to have an even stronger team.

Some of BMD Northcliffe's stand out performers for the Championships were Shannon Eckstein who snagged 6 gold medals in the Board, Restricted Surf Race, Surf Teams, Board Relay, Board Rescue and Taplin Relay, as well as Pierce Leonard and Zane Holmes took home 5 golds each. Veteran Beachie Simon Harris took out his 7th Open Male Beach Flags Championship and Tate Smith and Nick Crilly took out their 3rd consecutive Double Ski Championship.

BMD Northcliffe concluded the carnival in fine form by claiming both the Male and Female Taplin Relays and the Open Ironman and Open Ironwoman events with Pierce Leonard and Kristyl Smith.

BMD NORTHCLIFFE MASTERS CLAIM BACK THEIR TITLE

BMD Northcliffe Masters snatched back their Champion Masters Club title at the Australian Masters Surf Life Saving Championships in Perth this week after being defeated by local club Scarboro, at last year's titles. With only a small team of masters making the trip to Perth for the final year, it was going to be a tough ask to defeat the local Western Australian Clubs. BMD Northcliffe claimed 12 gold, 8 Silver and 9 bronze medals to win the overall pointscore by 54 points.

BMD Northcliffe's best performer at the Championships was Anna Ballara who picked up four gold medals in the Ironwoman, Ski, Board and Board Relay events. Gavin Hill and Barry Newman dominated their 40-44yrs age group claiming three golds each.

SHANNON TAKES BACK THE CROWN

Shannon Eckstein took out the 2009 Kellogg's Nutri-Grain Ironman Series after claiming a convincing victory in the final round of the series at Coogee. Eckstein blew his rivals away with sheer power to bag the final round and collect $33,000 in prizemoney for his fourth KNG title.

Pierce Leonard finished 2nd in the final round boosting his overall series position up to 4th. Zane's 4th place in the final round was enough to secure runner up in the series behind Shannon.

In the womens race Defending Series Champion Elizabeth Pluimers did all that she could to defend her title by winning the final round but unfortunately the positions behind her decided the overall series winner with Manly's Naomi Flood taking out the crown. Elizabeth was happy with her best performance of the season after battling injury early in the season. In the overall standings Kristyl Smith claimed 2nd with Elizabeth in 3rd and Courtney Hancock in 4th.
